Little Garden
Here is my little garden. I went to Walmart to buy a strawberry plant and ended up buying three other plants too. Last year I had bought a tomato plant which was growing very well. After a couple of days it bore about five or six tomatoes. Every morning before going to my office, I used to water it and check the tomatoes' sizes. I took pictures of it and proudly showed it to friends. One day they the little tomatoes were like green cherries, the next day they were at walnut-sized. It felt really good (I can’t say much about their taste, you’ll know why later!). Whenever I looked at the tomatoes from my bedroom window I felt delighted.
One morning, when I went to water it as usual, I ran into the bare stems! None of the leaves were remained there, let alone the tomatoes. I could see the stems were recently chewed with the scratched still on the stems, but I couldn’t figure by whom. We had lots of squirrels playing around my previous place and I got suspicious of them. Also, one day at dawn, when I was in the kitchen which had a door to our backyard, I had seen three deer, one much smaller than the others. I guess they were the parents roaming with their child. So, it’s probable that that day they had eaten my tomatoes before the dawn. I’m not sure if squirrels or minks can eat the whole tomato plant at once and leave scratches on the stem, can they?
Anyway, I thought I would never try buying a new plant as my past experience had cost me time and money in vain. I was also sad for my plant being eaten by uninvited guests too. After that, I didn’t like squirrels whenever I saw them on my way either!
However, this year I was determined I would like to have a strawberry bush. Then I remembered I still had the soil I bought last year, so maybe I can make a very small garden in my back yard. I bought the gardening net you see in the picture to protect the plants against the hungry animals. But to be honest, since morning when I planted them outside, I went out there to see if they are still sound and have checked them from the window a hundred times! I found some boxes from my online purchases and planted in them. I found that there is some garden edging I could have bought for having a nicer garden, but I wasn’t really sure I want to spend too much to feed squirrels! Maybe next year.
-I hope they don't dig under your net :P
