Some people believe that there should be fixed punishments for each crime but others disagree How to establish the perfect punishment system is really an annoying problem for the governors. People often argue about whether the punishments should be fixed for each type of crime or not and the opinions vary from person to person. Some people hold the view that people will have a clear understanding about each type of crime when the corresponding punishment is fixed. People would not commit crimes when they know well about the price to be paid and that will help to decrease the rate of crime. Besides, the fixed punishments will make the law fairer for everyone. There will be no room for criminals to quibble for themselves when every type of crime has its specific punishment and the lawyer won’t play an important role in a case because the law treats every person equally. However, some other people oppose this view. They think the punishment should involve all the related factors, such as the circumstances of an individual crime or the motivation for committing it. In their opinion, the fixed punishments may provide judges an easy way to hear cases but it also sets us in a mechanic world. For example, it is obvious injustice to punish one who has to kill others to protect him from being killed or hurt. We cannot treat this person as a murder. As to me, I prefer to support the latter view. Fixed punishments are not suitable for all the crimes because not all of them are the same and taking all the related factors into consideration is necessary if we hope to embrace the justice.
