鳥がなく Hello, I'm studying a nursery rhyme, but I don't find the meaning of one verb : なく When I type 鳥がなくin google translate it says "there is no bird". Here is the verb in its context: 鳥がなく 鳥がなく どこでなく 山でなく 里でなく 野でもなく I understand the rest. Does "なく" mean "to sing" ? Thank you

Thank you. It seems we have things in common ! I will definitely have a look at the rikaichan add-on. Merci !

You've said the answer perfectly. I also find Google translate isn't always helpful for Japanese. If you have Firefox the Rikaichan add-on is great for definitions, kanji. Have a look at that. なく can mean 'nothing' as in 'なくなる’ which means to become nothing/die, so Google has probably gotten the idea from there out of context.

There is no point on relying on google translate, because even with the kanji it says something very strange. So this kanji means animal noise like to roar, chirp or croak 猫はにゃーにゃーと鳴く Interesting
