You can use the basics or the fundamentals in this sentence. Basics implies that you are a beginner, and need to know the introductory skills. Fundamentals implies more the deeper principals of the skill, art or science. The elements are the main parts of something. Very similar concepts.

Difference between basic and fundamental

Basic, fundamental, and elementary are interchangeable words, I know,
But I'd like to know when can I use them. For example,

Once a teacher demonstrates the _________of drawing, painting, sculpture, and so on

What can I put in to the blanked-out word? Basic? Fundamental?

The basics of drawing, etc. :  this is what you should say.

The fundamentals of drawing, etc. :  you can say this, but it applies more to a theory than a practice like drawing.
