What is it like living in Beijing (part 2 finding a job) Graduates face a high level of competition when they try to find a fancy job in Beijing, which is partly because Beijing has most of the top schools of China, like Tsinghua University, Peking University, etc. But things can be very different only if they lower their standards. One of my classmates wants to get a position in CSR a state-owned enterprise ,the world's largest manufacturer of electric locomotives. Smart as he is, he still didn't get the job. Because there are 6 candidates (among which 2 are from Tsinghua University) competing for 1 position. He lowered his standards and tried some other companies, soon he received a few offers which are also very attractive.

When you say "fancy job," keep in mind that fancy could have a negative connotation for some English speakers. It's better to say "good job" or "high-paying job" if you do not intend to mock or tease.

Also, when starting a sentence with "but" or "because" or another conjunction, you have to make sure you have a complete sentence and not a fragment.  For example:

Fragment: Because 6 candidates were competing for one position.

Sentence: Because 6 candidates were competing for one position, he didn't get the job.

You can also reverse it and say: He didn't get the job because 6 candidates were competing for one position.

Great job. 非常好。

Hi Eileen, Jason's comments are all good especially regarding conjunctions. One other suggestion - instead of : But things can be very different only if they lower their standards. Maybe: Things can be very different if they lower their standards. Keep practicing! John.
