Octavius In 1761 a cargo boat called Octavius, left London and headed for China. After an uneventful voyage, the Octavius arrived at its destination, where its cargo was unloaded. After the harbour workers had loaded the boat again with another cargo to be taken to London, the boat left China. The ship's captain made the decision to take a shorter route, in order to arrive at London faster. The route had a reputation for being dangerous, as nobody had managed to complete it before. What made the captain take that route? The truth is that the boat disappeared and it wasn't seen until 1765, fourteen years later, when a whale boat discovered it. The cargo was apparently empty, but when some members of the whale boat's crew got on board they found otherwise. All the sailors, who were on the deck, had been frozen to death. The captain, in turn, was in his cabinet, sitting at his desk holding a pen and frozen to death as well. He had been writing, and the last entry had been written in 1762, a year after the disappearance of the boat. According to the captain's notes, the boat had been blocked by the ice. It seems that when there was no food left, the crew was frozen to death. It is said that the boat was immediately neglected, as the fishermen thought that it was accursed.
