THE LAD WHO WENT TO THE NORTH WIND THE LAD WHO WENT TO THE NORTH WIND There was once a poor widow who had one son. And as she was ill, her son had to go down the barn steps to fetch meal for cooking; But when he had got down the barn steps, the North Wind came puffing and blowing and caught up the meal and took it away through the air. The boy went down the barn steps for more, but the North Wind came puffing and blowing and blew the meal and took it away with a puff. More than that, he did so the third time too. This made the little boy very angry, so he went to the North Wind. But the way was very long; at last he came to his journeys end. “Hi, and thanks for coming to see us yesterday.” “HI, AND THANKS FOR COMING TO SEE ME NOW, WHAT DO YOU WANT?” For his sound was loud and gruff. “Oh, I don’t want to bother you but I have to be paid back that meal of yours which you took from us yesterday.” “I have no meal, but I have a cloth which could serve up all kinds of delicious meals, all you have to say is: Cloth, spread yourself, and serves up all sorts of good dishes.” So the boy took the cloth and headed home. But the way was long so he stayed at an inn, he had his dinner and took good care of it, and then went back home the next morning. When he had got home he became rich and found a happy work, and his mother was all better and became a manager in the University.
