For giving and receiving, は indicates the person doing the giving/receiving and に indicates the person the item given or received is travelling from/to. 私は彼に本をあげる - I give the book to him (私 has the は particle because that is the person doing the giving). 彼は私に本をくれる - he gives the book to me (彼 has the は particle because that is the person doing the giving) 私は彼に本をもらう - I receive the book from him (私 has the は particle because that is the person doing the receiving). Hope this clears it up!
