தோணி - The Boat
My first attempt at translating !
I've found this text on the net with few annotations and gave it a try.
தோணி
காவிரியில் வெள்ளம் இருக்கிறது. நான் திருச்சியில் இருக்கிறேன். அக்கரைக்கு போக வேண்டும். பேருந்து கிடையாது. புகைவண்டி கிடையாது. ஆற்றகரையில் ஒரு தோணி இருக்கிறது. நான் தோணிக்காரனிடம் "என்னை அக்கரைக்கு கொண்டு பொ. உனக்கு பத்து வெழள்ளியை கொடுப்பேன்". என்று சொல்கிறேன். அவன் "சரி" என்று சொல்கிறான்.
இப்போது தோணி ஆற்றின் நடுவில் இருக்கிறது. நானும் தோணிக்காரனும் தோணியில் இருக்கிறோம். நான் அவனிடம் சொல்கிறேன், “தம்பி! நீ இளைஞன். உமக்கு படிக்க தெரியுமா?”
“இல்லை.”
“அடடா! நீ வாழ்க்கையில் முன்னேறுவாயா?! உன் வாழ்க்கை பாகி வீண்.”
“ஐயா！உங்களுக்கு நீச்சல் தெரியமா？”
"தெரியாது."
“அடடா! உங்கள் வாழ்க்கை முழவதும் வீண். தோணியில் ஓட்டை இருக்கிறது. எனக்கு நீச்சல் தெரியம்.”
The Boat
This is Kaveri flood. I am in Thiruchi. I want to go on that shore. There is no bus. There is no train. There is a boat on the river bank. I say to the sailor “Take me to that shore. I give you 10 dollars.” This is what I said. He answered “ok”.
Then the boat is in the middle of the river. The sailor and I are on the boat. I said to him “Tambi ! You’re young. Can you read ?”
“I can’t.”
“Too bad ! Don’t you want your days to rise ?! You’re wasting half of your life.”
“Sir ! Can you swim ?”
“I can’t.”
“Too bad ! You’ve wasted your entire life. There’s a hole in the boat. I can swim.”
