How Do You Learn An English Word As a learner of English language I often encounter unfamiliar words when I read and this absolutely ruins the joy of my reading. So I frequently ask myself a question: how can I learn a word quickly and how do other people learn a word of foreign language? Despite the fact that there are lots of tips on how to build a better vocabulary on the internet, I'm going to give me a quiet time and sit back to think about the question myself. What shall I do with a new word? Well, let me forget about what the internet say, focus on the process of meeting a new word. 1) Imagine I'm reading now. While a new word stops me, I tell myself it doesn't matter I'll skip it over. After a little while the unfamiliar word appears for second time. Alright then, this time I may have a guess on what it means or write it down my own vocabulary book. So the first step for me is to make a list of new words my own. 2) Now I've had a list of words. Since I don't normally pronounce a word well, I listen to the pronunciation of each word and try to mimic it 3) Spelling is my second task. I'll write them for several times by pen, because pen helps me to remember better. 4) Now I move onto how to use the word in a sentence. I look it up in dictionary and find out what the common collocations are. 5) The last step is to put it into practice. How do you learn an English word? How have you got a better vocabulary? I'd love to hear from you.

Hi Adrian, I've never thought about Discussion Section before. This topic deserves a longer run indeed. I may do that. Ta.

Hi Юлия. First let me congratulate on your success in running a wonderful family. :) I specialized in something else other than linguistics during my tertiary education. So now I have a lot to catch up. Thank you very much for the response. By learning words in chunks, I assume that's what has made you capable of managing two foreign languages. Isn't it?

English is my first language, i still have problems with words. What i do is, if i see it wgen reading i look up gow to say it cause by the time you get done reading lets say a book you might have seen it a lot of times.. I call this the memorized way. This may be hard or easier for you to do keep with what you are doing if it works for you.
