a piece of advice
The most useful piece of advice I've ever received was from a teacher of mine.
It was more than 10 years ago, when I was about to graduate from university. At that time, I was not sure what kind of work I should do for a living. As a result, I turned to him because I thought he must have had more social experience than I had.
Surprisingly, instead of telling me what I should do, he told me a story about his own life. In his early twenties, he first worked as a lawyer by profession in a first-tier city because he could earn easy money in that field. He ended up doing that for nearly 5 years. During that stage of his life, he was feeling pretty depressed because he wasn't interested in that job at all, in spite of a the decent salary and happy family life he enjoyed. So he was wondering if it was a wise decision to be a lawyer. Fortunately, he realised that teaching would probably interest him himself, And then so he gave up the job in the city and studied very hard to get a teacher certification. At last, after a couple of years of hard work, his dream came true. He had been happily working as a teacher for years.
Needless to say, his story taught me a valuable lesson. That is to say, I shouldn't choose a career according to how much money I would make from it. My best bet would be to take a job I was really interested in.
It was due to his advice that I finally chose to work as a software engineer. (advise是动词, advice是名词)
