Happy Money When thinking about the correlation between money and happiness, many people still tend to think, “the more money you have, the happier you can get” However, this is not necessarily true. Of course, you’ve become rich and that doesn’t make you any less happy. Nevertheless, I think people should focus more on how to maximize their happiness out of the money they already have, rather than continuously being captured by the thoughts of making more money. One of the best ways of spending money is to buy experiences not to buy materials. You surely can derive a certain amount of happiness from the goods you’ve wanted to buy. However, that kind of happiness is fleeting at best. For example, you bought a nice set of TV and you must be thrilled about it at first. However, soon you will find yourself staying in and watching TV all day. If you had spent that money on having delicious meals or having some fun night-outs with your beloved friends, you would definitely have had a lot more to remember them by.

Notes:

I was trying to think about why “the more money you have, the happier you can get” sounds wrong, and it is a little bit confusing to me as well, but I will try to explain. I would say either, “the more money you get, the happier you will be” or “the more money you have, the happier you are”. I think the reasons are twofold. 1. The tense of “have” is present tense. 2. Have is a passive verb. The way I wrote it sounds more…consistent.

The sentence “you’ve become…” is supposed to be hypothetical, but you didn’t structure it as a hypothetical sentence.

I think you were thinking “material possessions” = “materials”, but if you just use materials, it means things to build other things.

Normally if you are referring to something right after you have said it, you will use “this” not “that”.

“must” is a very strong word in English. You cannot use it in hypothetical sentences like this.

THIS IS A TANGENT: I noticed a very big difference between English and Korean is the use of “must” and “need to”. If you say “you need to…” or “you must…” in English to someone, it is very…rude. Normally we would say “supposed to” or “should”, or just state a fact and let intonation tell them that they should do something.
