Essay practice: Modern subjects vs. traditional subjects in secondary school The educational model has always been one of the hot topics discussed on political debates and talk shows and few are the countries where people lack of different opinions about what subjects should be included in schools’ curricula. When referred to secondary ones, discrepancies exists between those who opt for keeping traditional subjects such as ancient Greek and Latin and those who would rather advocated that new subjects –computer courses are the best examples- should be implanted in order to prepare students for the novel necessities brought by the increasing development of new technologies. The problem is indubitably complex because both groups have a point as both kind of subjects are useful. The utility of computer courses and other subjects related with technology becomes obvious simply looking around. Computers surround us, they are part of our life to the point that they are involved in almost every activity –since watching TV to studying- and that influence will probably increase in the next years as new devices are constantly being launched. However, that presence of technology in our lives makes unnecessary to teach them in schools since students will learn them on their own for mere survival. It does not happen the same with classical languages, though they are important because they set solid bases which ease the learning of any other language, a transcendental activity in nowadays globalised world. So in conclusion Greek and Latin are, from my point of view, a better choice to be included in secondary schools’ curricula not only because of its importance, but also because they will probably not be learned otherwise.
