Although Alice Walker (had already) published a number of essays, poetry collections, and stories during the 1970s, it was her third novel, The Color Purple, was (published in 1982 and winning both the National Book Award and the Pulitzer Prize), which brought her the widest acclaim.

You can add had already (as Hunter did in his correction) if you want to add extra emphasis to the fact that the author had already experienced some minor success before writing The Colour Purple.

I think the it was that I added is important, as it makes the "although" at the beginning of the sentence make more sense. I can give a few more examples of this sentence pattern:

Although she had always respected and admired her father, it was only after he had passed away that she realised how much she loved him.

Although he had a number of reasons for wanting to go to study in the US, it was the prospect of a government scholarship which finally made up his mind.

Although he had a number of good qualities important in a potential husband (tall, handsome, well educated, good job), it was his kindest above all which convinced her to agree to marry him.

Hope this helps. Let me know if you have any questions.

Sentence Correction*

Although Alice Walker publishes a number of essays, poetry collections, and stories during** the 1970s, her third novel published in 1982, The Color Purple, won both the National Book Award and the Pulizter Prize , bringing her the widest acclaim.***

*Always capitalize major words in your title--e.g. all words except words like "a" or "the", "of" unless they are the first word in the title.

**"during" sounds correct to me here, but I think saying "in the 1970s" sounds more natural. Also, after you use a comma you must put a space after it. e.g. essays, poetry collections, stories   essays, poetry collections, stories Good!

***The rest of corrections I'm not sure how to explain...I just changed the sentence in a way that sounds more natural to me. I think in general this is a great sentence and English speakers would all understand your meaning. However, it is what we would call a "run-on sentence." Although in Chinese super long sentences are totally ok from what I've seen (I've seen entire paragraphs that are only one sentence in Chinese!) generally if a sentence in English goes on for more than three lines it is considered too long. We will do this too when we are writing, but if you want to write better essays/formal writing try to keep your sentences shorter :)
