An essay: Smoking in public places Anti-smoking laws and the harm of smoking is one of the widely discussed issues nowadays. The governments of many countries toughen these laws every year. Some people are outraged with their actions, but others suggest prohibiting smoking even in people’s homes and private cars to protect their children. Personally, I tend to think that smoking should be banned or at least regulated in certain public places and workspaces. First of all, according to the results of the researches, second-hand smoking is as noxious as direct smoking and it can cause or worsen many diseases. For instance, one of the most awful fatal diseases, the number of casualties of which is constantly growing because of smoking, is lung cancer. Furthermore, smoking is an addiction and people spend enormous amount of money and time on it. Some non-smokers believe that the ban helps people to smoke less or to quit smoking and to save their money for something more useful. On the other hand, we should not forget about people’s right to privacy and their freedom of choice. So governments must inform people about possible consequences of smoking in more efficient ways or more often that they do it now, and create more special places for smoking, but cannot ban it everywhere. In addition, people are different and maybe for some of them smoking has a small positive effect, like helping them to relax or overcome a stressful situation. For example, every pill, which we usually use for treatment, has its side effects, but it is not dangerous to take it rarely and when it is really needed. In conclusion, taking everything mentioned into account I would agree, that we must respect the rights of smokers to decide on their own whether to smoke or not, to harm their health or not, as well as the right of non-smokers to breathe the clean and fresh air.

An essay: Smoking in public places

Anti-smoking laws (and the harm of smoking) is one of the widely discussed issues nowadays.

For instance lung cancer is, one of the most awful fatal diseases, the number of casualties of which is constantly growing because of smoking, is lung cancer.(and the number of casualties linked to smoking is increasing year on year.) Furthermore, smoking is an addiction and people spend enormous amount of money and time on it. Some non-smokers believe that the ban helps people to smoke less or to quit smoking and to save their money for something more useful.

On the other hand, we should not forget about people’s right to privacy and their freedom of choice. So governments must inform people about (the) possible consequences of smoking in more efficient ways or more often than they do it now, and create more special(dedicated) places for smoking, but cannot ban it everywhere. In addition, people are different and maybe for some of them smoking has a small positive effect, like helping them to relax or overcome a stressful situation. For example, every pill, which we usually use for treatment, has its side effects, but it is not dangerous to take it rarely and when it is really needed.

In conclusion, taking everything mentioned into account I would agree, that we must respect the rights of smokers to decide on their own whether to smoke or not, to harm their health or not, as well as the right of non-smokers to breathe the clean and fresh air.(.. breathe clean fresh air.)

Inna, I put that first part in brackets because you used 'is'. Otherwise it could be considered two issues and therefore plural and "are".

It is about to become illegal in UK to smoke in a car when children are present. Apparently at least to start with, it will get an advisory rather than punitive response.

The government have always changed thing against smoking very slowly because they get so much revenue from the taxes on smoking, as usual they do not take into account the costs of healthcare for those with smoking related diseases.

There are alternatives: "according to the results of research" (anonymous) or "according to the results of the research by xxxx" - if you name the study or "according to the results of the researchers xxxx and yyyy" - if you named the people running the study.

Any questions, just ask.
