Hello Tati, they are almost the same when referring to something that is given free. If the occasion is a birthday or xmas, the gift is usually called a present: "birthday present" / "xmas present" / "wedding present" etc A "gift" can be anything at any time: flowers, jewellery, chocolates, shoes etc., Since 'present' is also a tense indicating 'now' and an action: "She presents the weather on TV" or "I present you with this medal" you wouldn't say "I present you with this present" you would say "I present you with this gift" or "I present you with this token of our gratitude".
