I have heard and read efface but you are right I have never used it in a spoken conversation. Thanks!

I've actually never heard of this word before, so in answer to the last question; no, it's not used commonly in spoken conversation. The fourth and fifth sentences ('He wanted to...' and 'I wish you would ...') don't sound right using 'efface' because the tone of those sentences is quite casual and 'efface' is too formal for those sentences.
