Practice: IELTS Writing Task 2 (Cambridge Book-8, Practice-3) Topic: Increasing the price of petrol is the best way to solve growing traffic and pollution problems. To what extent do you agree or disagree? What other measures do you thing might be effective? Answer: Growing traffic and pollution are two major problems of modern civilization that are followed by waste of time, road accident and health hazards. Some people believe that r the price of petrol, we can solve these problems, but I strongly disagree with this view. To begin with, regardless of petrol price, the total number of travellers will remain the same. For instance, people who need to travel to their workplace cannot stop going there even if the price of petrol is increased. To address the mentioned problems, we must increase the number of public transportations and make them popular. This will help us to decrease the number of private cars from the roads. For example, a single typical public bus can carry 30 to 40 passengers where a private car is used by only one or two persons on overage. Moreover, we need to use green fuel and invest more on research its research to keep our environment less polluted. Solar driven cars, for instance, are becoming popular to many people who are environment concern. In addition to that, we have to remove faulty vehicles and relocate industries far from residential areas, which will cut a good amount of toxic gas from the air that we breathe. Besides, we need to build more roads and highways to allocate smooth flow of traffic. However, increasing the petrol price may be helpful partly—people will be discouraged to use private cars, rather will prefer public transportation. In conclusion, I think, measures like public transportations, green fuels, faulty vehicle removal and so on should be taken besides the increment of petrol price. Higher petrol price alone cannot solve the growing traffic and pollution problems.
