SDR & Smong in Beijing There are two hot topics in China’s social media today. One is that the International Monetary Fund (IMF) completed the regular five-yearly review of the basket of currencies that make up the Special Drawing Right (SDR) last night. The IMF has decided to include the RMB into SDR basket effective October 1, 2016. The RMB will be one of the five currencies in the basket, along with the U.S. dollar, the euro, the Japanese yen and the British pound. The proportion of the RMB in the basket will be 10.92%. I’m not quite sure how this will impact us yet. Some economists are quite excited about this, while others seem indifferent. Another topic is the smog here in Beijing. The air has been hazardous for a couple of days and it’s been getting worse and worse. The air quality is beyond index today. You can hardly breathe. People are suggested to reduce outdoor activities. Primary schools are suspended and seniors are asked to stay at home. Everybody is posting funny pictures and stories on their social media space. The weirdest one is that some guy from a southern city came to Beijing. He collected the smog for 100 days using a special Industrial vacuum cleaner. With what he has collect, he made a brick out of it. Isn’t it horrifying?
