Hey, I'd love to listen to some good japanese music, but I don't know many of the artists. I'm not really into the whole harajuku (?) punk/pop-ish movement. Is there anything similar to the U.S. indy movement? Like, light rock, but not too much pop-ness. Let me know, and maybe I can recommend some of my favorite bands (Unfortunately my knowledge is limited to mostly U.S. and European music).
I found a website which has all the latest Japanese music
www.jpopasia.com
you can also watch music videos and find out which music is in the official Oricon charts. There are many genres including J-pop, J-rock J-rap etc.

im listening to mostly johny's entertainment artists like arashi, KATTUN, NewS, Kanjani8.
on j-rock/pop i like uverworld, greeen, aqua timez and YUI..
and of course, utada and BoA
if you like Jpop i'd recommend Mika Nakashima or Ayumi Hamasaki.
if you like Jrock then try some L'Arc en Ciel. try the GazettE or Miyavi for some heavier rock. they're all my personal favorite ^^v
Hmm, well their korean like BoA but they are huge in japan, Tohoshinki..
I like them a lot. But as far as rockish goes I really like The GazettE, Alice nine.
The band Dir en grey is acctually really big in america right now too and I like them.
