This is a lesson on how to use the verb "pedir" with other verbs in the infinitive and the subjunctive. "Pedir" means to ask or to request. It is a more formal way of asking someone to do something instead of using the imperative (command form).

1. Pronoun + Pedir + infinitive +…. Example sentences: a. Te pido venir a las seis de la tarde. English translation: I ask/request you to come at six in the afternoon.

b. Me pidió hablar con ella. English translation: She/he/you (polite) asked/requested me to speak with her.

c. Nos pidieron ser puntuales. English translation: They asked us to be punctual.

d. Le pide traer su identificacion. English translation: S/he/you (polite) asks/requests you to bring your I.D.

e. ¿Porqué me pides hacer eso? English translation: Why do you ask me to do/make that?

2. Person + Pronoun + Pedir + Verb Example sentences: a. Yo le pido que se vaya. English translation: I ask/request that you leave.

b. Tu le pides que sea mas educado. English translation: You ask/request that s/he be more polite.

c. Ella te pide que vengas mañana por la mañana. English translation:She asks/requests that you come tomorrow morning.

d. Nosotros les pedimos que presten atención. English translation:We ask/request that you (plural)/ they pay more attention.

e. Ellos nos pidieron que no fumemos en la habitación. English translation: They ask/request that we not smoke in the room.

f. ¿Porqué me piden que me vaya? English translation: Why do you ask me to leave/go?

3. A more formal/general form with Se + le(s) + pedir + verb +…. Which is usually used in establishments to specify rules or norms and can sometimes require the subjunctive if pedir is followed by “que”- (see example c.) a. Se le pide no tomar fotos en la iglesia. English translation: It is asked/requested that photos not be taken in the church.

b. Se le pide cancelar la cuenta antes de salir. English translation: It is asked/requested that the bill be paid before leaving.

c. Se les pidió que se quedaran hasta las ocho pero se fueran mas antes. Enlgish translation: It was asked/requested of them that they stay until eight but they left earlier.
