Hello, everyone! I am Ricardo and I will be teaching those who are interested in learning the european portuguese! Firstly, I would like to tell you this is Lesson 0, which means we won't start yet. Some of you know already that portuguese is very spoken specially in Brazil. Some of you know that portuguese is very a very well known language. But why? How? Portuguese people (from Portugal) were the first people in the world that started Discoveries in the XIV century: we invented caravel, which permitted us to expand our empire through the seven seas! Portuguese is as you know a latin language (as well as Romanian, Italian, French and Spanish). The portuguese language has suffered lots of modifications since roman period: we had in Portugal the Muslims, Barbarians, Romans, Celtics and lots of other civilizations that contributed for the construction of the language.
Today, Portugal in Europe, Brazil in America, Cabo Verde, Angola, Mozambique, Guiné Bissau, São Tomé e Princípe, in Africa and lots of other places in Asia, like some cities in India and in China! Portuguese is today the 5th most spoken language in the world (native language) and 3rd most spoken in Europe. I feel that a bit of history is important because it gives you the chance to understand the importance and the context of that language in the world. So I hope you got the idea of how big and important the portuguese language is. I would like to finish this text by telling you that we will learn European Portuguese and not Portuguese from Brazil. The brazilian is quite different in pronnounciation and it has some specific brazilian expressions that portuguese doesn't understand...Furthermore, Portuguese from Portugal and Brazilian have similar gramatical structure, however, brazilian uses some pronouns differently! If we had to compare Portuguese and "Brazilian", we would say it is like Spanish and "Mexican". So, don't worry, this is the correct portuguese and it is 100% universal. Next lesson we will learn the alphabet and some rules of pronnounciation! See you there! =)
