The verb “exigir” in Spanish means to demand, require, exact, or necessitate.

Examples of usage:

Subject + Exigir conjugated + qué + subjunctive

1. Yo exijo que vengan a la oficina hoy día. English translation: I demand that you (plural) come to the office today.

2. La ley exige que cada niño este acompañado por un adulto. English translation: The law requires that each child be accompanied by an adult.

3. Ella te exige que traigas tus documentos a la reunión. English translation: She requires that you bring your documents to the meeting.

Pronoun + exigir conjugated + infinitive + ….

1. Te exijo pagar la cuenta ahora mismo. English translation: I demand you pay the bill right now.

2. Me exigieron salir de la sala de audiencias. English translation: They demanded I leave the courtroom.

3. Hicimos lo que nos exigió pero todavía dicen que no es suficiente. English translation: We did what they demanded of us but they still say it is not enough.

Se le(s) + exigir conjugated +… (This form is used for general, more formal cases such as notices or rules)

1. Al sistema educativo se le exige una serie de cambios. English translation: A series of changes are required in the educational system.

2. Se le exige llenar un formulario de reclamo para recibir una recompensa. English translation: It is necessary to fill out a claim form in order to receive compensation.

3. No se le exige nada al amor. English translation: Nothing is demanded of love.
