-why could I not simply close my eyes and go back to sleep?
-why was I not able to simply close my eyes and go back to sleep?

and

-Why could I not find my home address again?
-Why would I not be able to find my home address again?

could is a ability

would is a kind of thought.   you can cleasr now ı think.  when you think some thing you can say  why would I not be able to find my school.

but You can say " I could find my keysç that isreal in the past. you didnit find your keys.   and was able to use generally for difficult situations.  I was able to pass the river, it could take me to the sea by the way it runs.

I hope that I can explain,   I would like to write more things but I dont have more time.
