How to write poetry

Poetry is an interesting form of writing. It is very free, has few restrictions and can be a great way to express feelings. Anyone can do write poetry. Just pick up a pen and begin practicing.

Begin with an idea or inspiration. Inspiration may come at any time very unexpectedly. It may be a specific person, place or thing that evokes some sort of strong emotion. It may be more of an abstract idea or release of emotion. It may be a tiny thing at the right moment, such as a leaf tossing in the wind a certain way.

Why not write an anonymous Valentine's Day poem for someone whom you love? Here's an example:

A Valentine's Day Sonnet: " If I loved you"

If I loved you and only you

But my thoughts could not reveal,

And you were false and I were true

Our love, would it be real?

If boundless seas and oceans vast

One day would not be there,

Your roving eyes would they be cast

At others if they be fair?

But your cruel heart may never see

My love for you, inside of me.

I wrote this short poem as a eulogy for my best friend who died of cancer.

THE WINTER

My winter has begun,

Cruelly devouring the final leaves of autumn

Your words fell like those last leaves

Betwixt sky and muddy earth

I can't imagine the world without you.

A poem about love and desire. Čiurlionis was a Lithuanian music composer and painter, famous for his mystical paintings of the signs of the zodiac

THE SONG OF ČIURLIONIS

The notes of Čiurlionis gently waft

Across the open fireplace,

Outside a myriad of snow flakes swirl.

A bottle of wine and you

My wanton, reckless lover

You calm and ignite me

With your voice, body and lips.

This poem sums up my Lithuanian Heritage:

REMEMBRANCE

I am the Lithuania of your dreams

Narrow ,winding , cobble stoned streets

The city of ancient Vilnius.

I am the Lithuania buried deep

In the depths of your soul

Tired, lined, ancient faces

Hunched over the pews of village churches.

I am the kings of long ago

Buried in the frozen kingdom of Trakai.

They will arise and awaken

Calling for triumph once again.

A poem about leaving Lithuania for the first time:

TRAVELLER

Longing claws at my heart

A desperate longing for you,

Longing for your lakes and forests

Longing for your pine lined beaches

Palanga and Nida beckon me to stay

Unexpected pain tears me asunder

Tears fall in memory of you

Longing to be within your amber shores again.

You can have fun and mix up people and personalities to make a poetry cake:

AN ITALKI CAKE

First, assemble all of your ingredients.

A dash of Adri, Ralph and Elisa

Add two sprinkles of Sedas,

Then three cups of João, Adri and Sonia.

Three pinches of Arwa, Maryna and Katya

Three pounds of Jeff, Kevin, Shaimaa and Randy.

Blend in two spoons of Peachey and Maxey

Pour in a pint of Padraig and British Coach,

Then stir vigorously with a handful of Eliot.

Last of all, add one cup of Joy.

Blend and mix all of the above thoroughly

Pour into the Italki site,

Bake for a year on a variety of temperatures.

Amazing!

What are your feelings about important celebrations in your life?

2011 CHRISTMAS

Dear Christmas,

You seem so near,

Yet you tease me with your exotic aromas

Wafting their way into my senses,

Like a long forgotten perfume I used to wear.

The songs that you sing to me

Remind me of the last time that we met.

With every fibre of my being

I long for you.

I order fruits of the sea to tempt you,

Then lavish my attention on earthly delights.

Grating, folding and rolling the sweet dough

That will satisfy the hunger in me.

I luxuriate in the smiles that you evoke in those around me.

The candles are lit and I await you.

Now it's your turn to write!

Think about form and begin to organize thoughts. Poetry comes in many forms, from epic poetry that has a story to dramatic poetry intended to be performed. Try them all out. One will come naturally. Maybe different poems fit different forms. Try free verse, which has basically no restrictions at all.

Remember rhythm and meter. There is a difference between the two, and both are equally important in poetry. Meter is the established pattern of the poem, while rhythm refers to the sound when it is spoken. Take both into consideration while writing a poem.

Use a lot of descriptive words. Create imagery with words, trying to appeal to all the senses in a literal way. Use symbolism, and metaphors. For auditory interest, try alliteration; the repeating of similar sounds in a sentence or phrase. All of this adds life and interest to a poem.

Get outside opinions. Don't be afraid to share work with others. Learn to accept criticism and grow from it.This site is very useful
