    OUR COUNTRY AZERBAIJAN
            (Part II)

Azerbaijan has an ancient and rich culture. The mausoleums, towers and palaces existing in different places in Azerbaijan speak of  its  people`s  rich and ancient culture. The famous Giz Galasi (the Maiden Tower) in Baku, The Nakhchivan and Garabaglar mausoleums, the Shirvanshahlar palace in Baku, the Khansarayi in Shaki are all samples of the craftsmanship of Azerbaijani architects and builders.
At a distance of  60 kilometers from Baku there is a settlement called Gobustan. Today it is known far and wide in the world, for it was here that over two thousand pictures relating to ancient life were found on the rocky mountains. The oldest of them were made some three or even four thousand years ago. The pictures give rich material for study of the life, customs and beliefs of the ancient people who once lived there. Gobustan shows that Azerbaijan is one of the old countries of the world.
The art and literature of Azerbaijan have ancient traditions. Beginning with 12th century Azerbaijan poets have occupied a prominent place in the world literature. The first to be mentioned is the great Nizami Ganjavi, the author of Khamse composed of five romantic poems. He was both a great poet and a thinker of his time.
Another famous Azerbaijani poet and thinker is Muhammad Fizuli. Many lyrical poems of his are very popular to this day. The most popular of them is his romantic epic “Leili and Majnun”.
Contemporary Azerbaijan literature also occupies a prominent place in world literature. It has such great representatives as Huseyn Javid, Ahmad Javad, Mikail Mushvig, Jafar Jabbarli, SamadVurgun, Shahriyar, Khalil Rza, Bakhtiyar Vahabzadeh and others.
Azerbaijani folk music has rich traditions too. The great Nizami, who lived in the 12th century, mentioned about 30 national musical  instruments.
Azerbaijan has rich contemporary music composed by outstanding composers. Such as the great Uzeir Hajibayli, Gara Garayev, Fikrat Amirov, Arif Malikov and others.
All these facts show that Azerbaijani people are one of the ancient and cultured peoples in the world.
We have a rich and beautiful country and are proud of our country Azerbaijan.

    OUR COUNTRY AZERBAIJAN
            (Part I)

Our country Azerbaijan borders on Turkey and Iran in the South, Georgia in the West and Armenia in the North-West. On the East Azerbaijan is bounded by the Caspian Sea. Azerbaijan is a large country. About 9 million people live in Azerbaijan.
As a result of wars between Russia and Iran, Azerbaijan was divided into two parts according to the Turkmanchay Treaty in 1828- South Azerbaijan and North Azerbaijan. In some books the parts of Azerbaijan are called Russian Azerbaijan and Iranian Azerbaijan.
North Azerbaijan has become an independent country now. It is now called the Azerbaijan Republic. It has its own tricolour flag  and national emblem, state anthem, money and army.
There are three colours on our National flag. The blue colour means the unity of Turkish people. The red colour is modernity. The green colour is the symbol of Islamic unity.
The eight –pointed star and the moon are symbols of happiness and prosperity.

The Azerbaijan Republic is a multinational state. People of different nationalities live in the Azerbaijan Republic. Most of them are Azerbaijani Turks. The Russians, Jews, Lezghins, Kurds, Talishes, Tatars, and many other nations live in the Azerbaijan Republic too. All of them enjoy equal rights to develop their national language, culture, and traditions.
There are a lot of rivers in Azerbaijan. The longest of them is the river Kur. It rises in Turkey and flows into Caspian Sea. There are two electric power stations on the river Kur: the famous  Mingachevir  Hydroelectric Power Station which was built some years ago.
There are thick and large forests in Azerbaijan where different wild animals live: bears, wild boars, mountain goats, leopards, wolves, foxes and other wild animals.
Azerbaijan is famous for its mineral springs. Among them are Isti-su (hot water), Badamli, Sirab and others.
Azerbaijan has a lot of natural riches, the principal one being oil.The oil production occupies the major place in the economy of the republic. Other natural riches of Azerbaijan are cobalt, copper, rock-salt, marble and many, many others.
The people living in Azerbaijan have been engaged in agriculture and animal husbandary for millennia. They used to keep cows, buffaloes, sheep, horses, goats, camels and other domestic animals.
Azerbaijani cotton and silk are known all over the world from the ancient times. Even in the old times merchants from different countries came to Azerbaijan to buy silk.
There are rich fisheries along the coast of the Caspian Sea and on the bank of the river Kur. Black caviar from Azerbaijan is famous in the whole world.
