Learning Great Azerbaijan composer Uzeyir Hajibayov

UZEYIR HAJIBAYOV (1885-1948)

Uzeyir Hajibayov, the great Azerbaijan composer, musician, dramatist, publicist and teacher, was born in 1885 in Aghjabadi in the family of a village clerk. When Uzeyir was a little boy, his family came to Shusha, one of the beautiful and old towns of Azerbaijan. There little Uzeyir began to go to school. In 1899 he went to Gori Seminary to continue his study. At the seminary he got interested in literature, history, music and did his best to learn Russian well. After finishing Gori Seminary Uzeyir came back to Garabagh and began to work as a teacher in Dizag. He taught literature, history, music and Russian. Some years later he came to Baku and continued to work as a teacher. Here U. Hajibayov began to write articles to different newspapers and became a good publicist. Uzeyir Hajibayov was a talented musician. In 1907 he wrote his first opera “Leyli and Majnun” and laid the foundation of the Azerbaijani national opera. Then one after another he wrote his other operas: “Sheikh Sanan”(1909), “Rustam and Sohrab”(1910), “Shah Abbas and Khurshudbanu”(1912), “Asli and Karam”(1912), “Leyla and Harun”(1915), “Koroglu”(1937) Besides, he wrote some musical comedies such as “Housband and Wife”(1909), “Mashadi Ibad”(1910), and the famous “Arshin Mal Alan”(1913). These musical comedies showed that Uzeyir Hajibayov was not only a great composer, but also a talented dramatist, because he himself wrote the libretti of this comedies. Uzeyir Hajibayov was the member of the Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan and a people`s Artist of the USSR. Uzeyir Hajibayov died in 1948 in Baku.
