The 28 th of May is the great day for Azerbaijan people. On this day in 1918 the Azerbaijan Democratic republic was proclaimed. So it is the date of foundation of the first Democratic Republic. In the history of Azerbaijan. The first chairman of the Azerbaijan National Council was M. A. Rasulzadeh, the great son of Azerbaijan people.
The Azerbaijan Democratic Republic existed less than two years from the 28th of May till the 27th of April. During this short time the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic took some important decisions but could realize only some of them. One of these decisions was about the establishment of Baku University, now named after M.A.Rasulzadeh., one of the founders of the University.
The Azerbaijan Democratic Republic had great plans to improve the life of Azerbaijan people and make Azerbaijan one of the flourishing countries in the world but couldn`t carry out its plans.
On the 27th of April in 1920 the Eleventh Red Army came to Baku, occupied the city and the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic fell.
Years passed but Azerbaijan people did not forget the first democratic republic in their history. And in 1991 the tricolour flag, the beautiful flag of the first Azerbaijan Democratic Republic, was raised. The flag one raised was hoisted again, and the 28th of May has been declared the national holiday of the Azerbaijan people!!!
