The verb take the plural form
A verb with several subjects coordinated take generally the plural form, even if each of these subjects is singular.
ex: Pour une fois, la majorite et l'opposition etaient d'accord.
Une photo ou un schema viendront eclairer le texte.
It will always take the plural form if at least one of the subjects is plural.
ex:"Les bonnes manieres et l'audace ne font pas toujours bon menage.
"Ni ses soeurs ni son frere ne seront la"
If in the subject the persons are different, the verb is always plural and it is always with the smallest person expressed.
ex:"Francoise et moi avons passe nos vacances dans le perigord (1rst person:me, smallest that the 3rd person: Francoise; so the verb is at the 1rst plural person)
"Genevieve et toi etiez deja au courant (2nd person: toi, smallest than the 3rd person: Genevieve; so the verb is at the 2nd plural person).
The verb take the singular form
The verb stays at singular if the second term is used to point out in another way the first term.
ex:" La marjolaine, ou origan, parfumera delicatement vos pizzas" (marjolaine and origan are two different ways to point out the same plant)
" Le jeune concertiste, et professeur au conservatoire, interpretera ce soir des oeuvres de Chopin" (le jeune concertiste et professeur au conservatoire are two different ways to point out the same person)
The verb will generally stays singular if the singular subjects are excluded themselves.
ex:" C'est la perseverance et non l'orgueuil qui vous fera parvenir a vos fins"
It can have coordination even if the conjonctions "et" and "ou" aren't expressed. The same rules are applied here.
ex:" Son frere, sa soeur, son mari etaient la" (plural verb with several singular subjects)
" Un rappel, une simple mise au point suffirait a leur rafraichir la memoire" (we can consider "rappel" and "mise au point" pointing out the same reality).
