Common Prepositions and Contractions



Prepositions are words that describe location, for instance, 'at', 'of' etc.

However, unlike in English, some of these contract. That means they join with other words to form new words. Here are the prepositions, with the contractions with definite and indefinite articles.


Common Portuguese Prepositions and their Contractions

means in, on or at

em + o = no
em + a = na
em + os = nos
em + as = nas
em + um = num
em + uma = numa
em + uns = nuns
em  + umas = numas
por
means by, through or for

por + o = pelo
por + a = pela
por + os = pelos
por + as = pelas

por does not combine with um, uma, uns or umas
a
means at or to

a + o = ao
a + a = à
a + os = aos
a + as = às

a does not combine with um, uma, uns or umas.
de
means of or from

de + o = do
de + a = da
de + os = dos
de + as = das
de + um = dum
de + uma = duma
de + uns = duns
de + umas = dumas
para
means for, to, so that, in order to

para
does not combine with any other words.
