Prepositions are words that describe location, for instance, 'at', 'of' etc.
However, unlike in English, some of these contract. That means they join with other words to form new words.
Here are the prepositions, with the contractions with definite and indefinite articles.

por + o = pelo
por + a = pela
por + os = pelos

por does not combine with um, uma, uns or umas

means at or to
a + o = ao
a + a = à
a + os = aos
a + as = às

umas.

de + o = do
de + a = da

means for, to, so that, in order to
para does not combine with any other words.
