Lesson 6 Hiragana Lesson 12 Hiragana Chart

Edit

Hiragana

ひらがな (hiragana) is used to write native Japanese words. You should have already read the first two chapters on Japanese pronunciation and introduction to reading Japanese.

In this chapter, we are going to look at the overall ひらがな syllabary. The base kana contains 50 characters and are called gojūonzu (fifty sounds illustration), however, three of the fifty original sounds are duplicates, two are obsolete, and an extra one has been added, so that presently there are forty-six in common use. Following this chapter are lessons designed to help you master reading and writing ひらがな. There is also a Kana Chart that displays both かな scripts for you to print out and use as reference. ひらがな are not just geometric shapes, strokes need to be formed and arranged in a certain way.
