Verbs in Portuguese end in 3 different suffixes. These suffixes are -ar, -er, and -ir. These suffixes determine how the verb's tenses are handled.

* amar - to love
* beber - to drink
* cantar - to sing
* chegar - to arrive
* comer - to eat
* comprar - to buy
* conhecer - to know (as in being acquainted with)
* correr - to run
* dormir - to sleep
* estudar - to study
* falar - to speak
* ficar - to become, to stay, or to remain
* partir - to leave
* vender - to sell
* viver - to live
