Russian Introduction

Russian

The Russian Wikibook is designed to present lesson material through intellectually conducive methods. The lessons are designed to give maximum immersion, and in most cases give text with only the Cyrillic spelling. This book will utilize the BGN/PCGN romanization for Russian, as this is a book for English speakers, and it is the most intuitive method for those familiar with the latin alphabet. This method will be discussed in Lesson 1.

The book is best used as a normal textbook. Intensive study of one lesson or section, followed by a retention (rest) period, and then follow-up with memorization tests and supplemental vocabulary. There is no curriculum, since this is not a class, and all students are encouraged to progress at their own pace. The most effective method is to study only what is presented in the lessons, and refer to the Reference only when needed.

The lessons aim to provide the student with a basic knowledge of conversation. As such, lessons will focus more on conversational response than exact syntactical relationships. Also, because most sounds cannot be conveyed accurately through literature, audio will be provided whenever possible to compare and contrast one's own speech.

Each lesson is divided into several parts, which comprise easily digestable material. Each part has three or more sections, core material, supplemental vocabulary, and a culture note or extra information. Exercises are abundant throughout, and the student should do every exercise available. A test is available at the end of a lesson to test gained knowledge, and will be a cumulative test, with a grading system to recommend progression or not.

Because this book, as well as the student, is unmoderated, a student should progress at his or her own rate. Normally an entire lesson should take about a week to read, using no more than one hour a day per part.

No materials are necessary, besides those necessary to read this book. Paper and pen, to take notes, and possibly a book of flash cards, could help beyond the basic propaedeutic.

When ready, begin the first lesson.
