Basic Swahili Phrases

Swahili is the most widely spoken language in sub-Saharan Africa. It enjoys official status in several east African countries, including Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda and Mozambique.


A typical exchange goes like this:

1: Hujambo!
2: Sijambo!


Meaning:
1. Nothing is that matter with you?
or (How are you) 2. Nothing is the matter with me!
or (I am fine)

A more colloquial example:

1: Mambo!
2: Poa!



Meaning:
1: Any worries? 2: No complaints!

Goodbye - Kwaheri; Kwaherini (plural)
See you later - tutaonana baadaye Thank you - Asante; Asanteni (plural)
You're welcome - Karibu; Karibuni (plural)
No worries; Take it easy - Hakuna Matata
