X is twice as long as Y = for example, X is 2 km long, and Y is 1 km long.
X is almost twice as long as Y = X is a little less than 2 km long, say, 1.9 km.
X is more than twice as long as Y = X is more than 2 km long, for example 3 km.
X is twice as popular as Y = for example, out of 30 people, 10 people liked Y better, but 20 people liked X better.
