A "hand" in this context refers to help or assistance. We also use the terms farmhand and factory hand as job titles.
It means to help like if someone were to say " Can I lend you a hand ?" it means need help ? like need an extra hand to help you out . :]
It means to help someone do something, especially something that involves physical effort
