Business style drinking.
I have a question about culture. It seems in Korean , Chinese and maybe Japanese culture it is common for businessmen to push other businessmen to drink lots of alcohol. In South Korea I have heard stories of people hiring professional drinkers to challenge prospective customers into drinking lots of alcohol. In many circumstances it is common to drink the entire cup at once and drink 3 cups in a row. When I was in inner Mongolia they would have three shot glasses on a plate. They would pass the plate around. It was typical for each person to do all three shots. As a Western person I'm not familiar with the concept of pushing other people to drink alcohol. It seems that this is a tradition of macho man from the older generation. I would be interested to hear if people have some insights or explanations why it is considered polite to push others to drink alcohol?

It's pretty common here in China. Business persons usually drink first then talk about business. Cause all the deals have been easier done on the dinner tables. And they can talk anything they want, they can do ANYTHING they want.
Actually, as a Western person in the U.S., you should be all to familiar with the concept of pushing other people to drink. Not you personally, but surely you must have heard of the parties that often go on at U.S. colleges where people are not only encouraged to drink, but consider it a necessary rite of passage. "Binge" drinking is now a major problem at many colleges.
As far as the business drinking you mentioned, such customs, no matter how dysfunctional, develop over time and are hard to change.
Throughout history, in many societies, the ability to intake large amounts of alcohol (at least with males) is considered a sign of the man's worth - despite all evidence to the contrary.
Mind you, I have nothing against alcohol basically - just the idea that drinking large amounts it of and short-circuiting your brain should be a social requirement.
