Expired question
How do you view the ideological contests in Indonesia?

I noticed that a many of the subscribers to italki are beginning their lives. My question is influenced by recent incidents concerning the Indonesian: Front Pembela Islam (FPI) and their success in dictating the terms of free speech. Are many in support of an Islamic state based on Sharia law? Of great concern is the bullying tactics, the willingness to exercise violence resulting in fatalities, and their hysteria about some to the programs and legitimate institutions that are being shut down. What I am reading is no different in substance from when Indonesia was a former colony of the Netherlands? The complaint made by Indonesian Nationalist movements during 20th century were precisely the kind of tactics used on Indonesians by the Dutch. What recent accounts tell me about the Islamists organizations is that they are repeating history. The people involved have forgotten the reality Indonesia experienced in recent history.
