Regarding the word "thought"

Amber is your mom? Really? I would have thought she was your sister.
Amber is your mom? Really? I thought she was your sister.

Can anybody tell me the difference between these sentences?
How do I use them properly? Thank you.

    These sentences mean the same thing, just with slight differences. I would have thought means that if you hadn't told me differently I would have thought this way. I thought just means you already did the action. Meaning I thought she was your sister and then you corrected me instead of I would have thought that except for the fact that you already told me she was your mother. You can use both sentences the same for all intents and purposes though.
