what is the first step of learning jananese？

I think the first step is to master hiragana.
I suggest you practice writing hiragana, listening to the pronunciation at first.
I think the pronunciation of Japanese is simple and not so diffuicult compared with other foreign languages.
So you'll master it easily if you study hard.

I agree with Mary. Hiragana is the first you need to work on. Maybe learning simple words in Hiragana along your study can keep your motivation.

I agree with the two individuals above. Mastering hiragana is absolutely important. It will help you better understand the vocabulary you are learning later on. Moreover, you start to think in hiragana, which is very helpful for pronunciation. :]

When I first started out I worked to master the hiragana while learning a few basic greetings and expressions.
