Somehow your example doesn't sound quite right to me. For cars, yes. We talk about "make and model," as in a Honda Civic. Honda is the make and Civic is the model. Even more frequently, people use year + model to talk about cars. E.g., "I was going to buy a Honda Civic, but I'm going to wait until the 2013 models come out."
For computers, I think it's more common to say that the MacBook is a TYPE of Apple computer, or a KIND of Apple computer. (It's a boring way to say it, but it's clear.) But the MacBook has a 2012 model, for example, just like cars.
