    "stando" is gerundio presente of verb "stare".
    In this sentence "stando" switchs "by"
    i was burned by the sun
    "mi sono": "i was" "scottato": "burned" "by": "stando (al)" "sole": "sun"
    you can also say: "mi sono scottato SOTTO IL (wich is the correct translation of " by the") sole", that's more informal but the form most used by native speakers for sure.
