how does one conjugate verbs in korean?

This is the way I was taught

You drop the 다 and add 어/아/여(요)

먹다 -> 먹
가다 -> 가

To choose -

If the last vowel in the word is 오 or 아 you use 아(요)
가다 -> 가 + 아 = 가 because 가아 would be unnatural
보다 -> 보 + 아 + 봐 because 오 + 아 = 와

If it doesn't end in 오 or 아 you use 어(요)
먹다 -> 먹 + 어 = 먹어
마시다 -> 마시 + 어 = 마셔 because 이 + 어 = 여
Also : 으 + 어 = 아
우 + 어 = 워
If it ends in 하다 you use 여(요) which changes to 해
공부하다 -> 공부하 + 여 = 공부해
사랑하다 -> 사랑하 + 여 = 사랑해
