I put the subordinate clauses in (( )) - you can remove them from the sentence and read:

In view of this, Mrs. Griffiths, was actually wondering why Clyde should of a sudden become so enthusiastic about changing to this new situation.

this is the main sentence. the others are subordinate clauses. The sentence is very hard to understand, it looks like something more spoken, where we can add little details in subordinate clauses like this and not make it as hard to follow (since you hear the rythm in the persons voice, its easier to associate different parts of the sentence).

"why Clyde should all of a sudden" = "why Clyde would all of a sudden" all of a sudden = suddenly

the main idea in the sentence is --- I don't know why he is suddenly so enthusiastic about this situation!
