Resolved questions
Please, help me in Finnish!

I'd like to know more about using umlauts, ending a word.
For example, suuri-suuressA and pieni-pienessÄ.
Why are umlauts used in some words' forms and not?

(I've heard some rule: when a word contains some letters, its form end on umlaut....)

I need your help. Thank you! ;)

Объясните, пожалуйста, почему при изменении падежей в некоторых словах появляются умляуты в конце, а в некоторых - нет? ( SuomessA, HelsingissÄ) Заранее благодарна!

In Finnish language a word (some exceptions with borrowed words can occure) can only contain front vowels [e] ja [i] that are considered to be neutral and either back vowels [ɑ], [o], [u] or front vowels [y], [æ]( > ä), [ø]( > ö).

That is why in the word SUURI, where there are the back vowel U, the vowel added to the end also has to be a back vowel, in this case A -suuressA

and in the word PIENI, where there are front vowels, the vowels added to the end also have to be front vowels, in this case Ä -pienessÄ.

    kissa - kissaSSA
    koira - koiraSSA
    auto - autoSSA
    tuoli - tuoliSSA
    ämpäri - ämpäriSSÄ
    tynnyri - tynnyriSSÄ
    työ - työSSÄ
    päivä - päiväSSÄ
    yö - yöSSÄ
