[Tagalog] translation word by word?

hello~ :D

i found that Tagalog phrase sometimes can't be translated word by word, is that true? i mean, it could be different meaning if i separate it.. for example "mahal na mahal kita".. "mahal" means "expensive", but when it comes to "mahal na mahal kita" then it means "i really love you".. for a beginner, i must memorize the vocabulary or the words first?

it's interesting when i found that some words has the same writings & meanings in Bahasa Indonesia, like mahal (expensive), lima (five), kanan (right) :D even some words also similar in vernacular language here, like anim (enam in Bahasa & Javanese, means six), pito (pitu in Javanese, means seven), ako (aku in Bahasa, means i).. :p

maraming salamat.. : )
CMIIW : )

Sometimes one word has different meanings just like the word "mahal" it means "love" and "expensive". You also need to learn the right intonation of some words. Example: kaibigan. kai-bi-gan means friend while ka-i-bi-gan means lover.

    Hope this helps :)

you can actually translate it word by word but not to the exact sentence pattern as to that of english and yes of course, Teacher Arlyn is right about tagalog words of different meanings.

An Indonesian like you won't find it hard to learn Tagalog. The fact that there are few Bahasa term (and even sentence pattern - I suppose) that are quite similar to Tagalog, learning it would quite be simple. Learning simple tagalog expression such as "mahal kita (I love you)", "maraming salamat sa iyo (thank you)", "magandang umaga / hapon / gabi (good morning / afternoon / evening)" could be your first step to appreciate our language.

I think we can learn from each other - - soon.

    good luck.

    :)
