Quando il "se" è retto da "stesso", l'accento non è necessario, quindi usualmente si scrive "se stesso."
When "se " is followed by "stesso" the accent is not necessary , you can always use both but
"Se stesso " is mostly used by everybody in the write form .Anyway this a typical doub for " L' Accademia della crusca! " not for normal people! We often use it without accent .

The stressed one is correct. sé stesso = himself

It's "sé stesso" and not "se' stesso". In any case "sé stesso" and "se stesso" are both right, but "se stesso" is more frequently used nowadays.
Please note that the accent is compulsory when you use "sé". For instance: parla sempre di sé e dei suoi problemi; quell'uomo è troppo pieno di sé (he's too conceited); Maria è fuori di sé dal dolore (Maria is overcome by her sorrow). Ciao!!!

Adesso puoi usare se` stesso;
nelle grammatiche di molti anni fa, era scritto che
nella locuzione ' se stesso ' , l'accento NON devi metterlo, in quanto
/se/ non puo` avere il significato di /if/.
Adesso la regola e` cambiata, e` preferibile usare / se` stesso /, ma se usi
/ se stesso / non fai un errore.
