The rigid class structure and 'line of command' meant things such as my riding on the floor buffer while a sophomore student operated the machine. It was thought that my weight on the rotating brushes would had to the sheen (shine) of the floor.
A floor bufferis a machine that rotates brushes over a wooden or tiled floor that has just been waxed.
Sitting on the machine would be a lowly task. The writer had a job with low status at the time.
