A question about "가자"

I am wondering about the the phrase 가자.
I think it means let's go? Is it just a phrase for going or can you say something similar for let's eat?

    "가자" = "let's go"
    "~자" is informal ending meaning "let's"
    so yes, you can say 먹자 meaning "let's eat"
