How do you know when to use -는 것 vs -기?

I know they are both used to make verbs into nouns, but I am still confused on when to use each one. If possible, examples would be great. 감사합니다!

As you know, both of them make verb to noun.
Hmm i think there is no difference between 하는 것 and 하기.
But 하기 can be used when you finish sentence.
But 하는 것 cant be used in the last word of sentence.
Ex) 밥 하는건 오래 걸리니깐 집에오면 바로 하기!
~ 집에 오면 바로 하는 것! It cant be used.
But i think first sentence is also used only sometimes.
Hmm i think there is no big difference..

Aside from when they are used in informal situations for slang, which allows loose grammar, they are as similar as to+verb and gerund, considering '-는 것', '-기', to+verb, gerund functions as a noun in sentences.
